Welcome to the time of year where long shots from across the football spectrum get training camp opportunities with NFL teams. We’ve seen undrafted players make teams and claim to be the ultimate underdog to make it, but apparently they haven’t met Jake Metz.
Metz is a former Arena Football League star who helped lead the Philadelphia Soul to an Arena Bowl World Championship in 2016. Of course, we have seen others make it out of the AFL to star in the NFL, most notably Hall of Fame QB Kurt Warner.
He’s surely a one of a kind case though right? Sure it’s rare, but Metz might just be up for the challenge.
After the 2016 season, Metz signed on with the Qingdao Clipper of the China Arena Football League and nearly led them to a championship just months later, by falling short in the China Bowl. He is used to being the underdog though while taking on his next great challenge, as he hails from D2 Shippensburg University.
Metz hung around with the Philadelphia Eagles last offseason before being cut in the preseason, which sent him back to the arena ranks. However, this time around things may go differently. Here at Underdog Sports we root for the long shots because they are the reason sports are so great.
However, the truth is, Jake Metz is an extremely talented young defensive lineman. His potential is sky high as he stands 6’7 and 265lbs, and has been named ‘Arena Football League’s Defensive Player of the Year’ at just 26 years old. This preseason could be the final step in Metz’s journey to making an NFL team and should be intriguing to keep an eye on.
